happy birthday + 1 day mag! thanks for the great party and the chance for me to meet up with old friends and law people that i've not met in ages =) and it didn't hurt that the venue was right opposite my house; the joys of traveling time saved. anyway, photos to be posted next time since i dealt with my backlog all morning, i.e the photos above. 2 days before a new school year begins, i can't help but wish for time to just hurry up and put us in the new scheme of things already. at this moment, people are about to leave, school is about to start, new lives about to begin. i don't like these Abouts. i want to Know what the new academic year will be like; will i be lonely? live a more fulfilling life? mug my head off? will they overseas kids want to come home at all? will the rest of the pond rush to smooth out the ripples, as if the hurled stone had never disturbed its surface? i guess we're going to find out soon, but for now, life is in a sort of limbo.

2 weeks ago at the science centre

all the photos here.

finally got around to visiting Giraffe at Istana park today; a long time wish because the last time i was there, i was so in love with the ambience and decor. indeed, the modern layout with hints of african savanna chic was still pleasing to the eye on my second visit, and the lush greenery of istana park outside the full length glass windows made the dining area on the 2nd floor seem like a world away from the bustle of orchard road below. right, so ambience wise, guys should definitely have no qualms about bringing their dates here to charm their knickers off, but please know what you want to order, cos their service staff aren't going to make things easier for you.

let's recount a true story: pet ask staff member X, "tell me more about this chilli mackerel dish". X frantically tries to come up with an answer as a look of utter helplessness embosses itself upon her face. after 3 seconds, X decides she can come up with none, and embarassed, she runs off "to check". 10 minutes march on by, doo da doo da... she returns and tells pet that the chilli mackerel dish "is a kind of fish!" "-_-. the earnest triumph and relief in her voice barely manage to calm pet's urge to slap someone around with a large trout. like...DUH I KNOW A MACKEREL IS A FISH! thank you for wasting 10 min of my life reinforcing my basic understanding of the fish family. ah well. be calm now; ok alright, it sounds like a decent dish... how wrong can fish in chilli go? the fried/ steamed/ quantity aspect of it shall be a good surprise. so fine, pet orders the dish but when it arrives 20 min later, the plate somehow contained 6 pieces of spring roll. errrr... long dead thing with head, fins and tail? chilli? hello? mystified, she asks another waiter whether they got the order correct, and he assures her that it is. hmmm... eyebrows raised, she bites into it to see a reddish brown slice of somthing that looks suspiciously like... otah.

"is otah made of mackerel?" "yeah, i think so," replies her dinner companion. "otah= spicy...houston, i think i know where the chilli mackerel part comes in". damn. "wtf, if it's otah spring roll, just say so. chilli mackerel my arse!" he exclaims in indignation, but not so indignant cos the spring roll was nonetheless yummy. haha, fine example of how embellishment can add so much more value to your menu. but if u're the Whatever and Anything drinks kind of person and like to be surprised by how your food turns out, then you will probably enjoy yourself here, since the food quality is there for sure. oh and ask me about another incident when khel asked for a drink recommendation and server replied, "i don't drink!" hrrmppph. service standards aside, i guess i would return to Giraffe, simply because it is a gem of a dining spot and a pretty place to chillax with friends. but next time, i shall "ask no questions and get no answers"; i'll create my own surprises thankyouverymuch =)

15 months now. time flies but every mile was logged and cherished as it progressed. it's been a good flight, and i hope you continue to enjoy it as you take the next leg on your own.

see the full range of photos we took that night at this place!

i enjoyed watching the simpsons very greatly; so many DoH moments and wickedly funny puns. although it defies the current "3D total realism" animation trend with its 2D graphics, i didn't see anything ugly with it, contrary to how the trailers mocked itself. going by the number of people acting up and singing along whenever they hear the words "Dome", "Spider" or "Pig", i suppose i'm not the only one who loved the show.

after spending the last few times out together trawling parts of town that we've already scoured multiple times, khel and i decided that we need to do something different. so yesterday saw us indulging in 3 hours of kbox. this didn't kill my throat, surprisingly and we sang till, for once, we didn't have anything more to sing and left even before the staff hurried us out. ah beng activity, Check. last sunday was childhood revival day for us; we went to the SCIENCE CENTER!! -_- just like in the good ol' primary school days, i gushed at the chicks hatching from the incubator dome (oh! "spider pig, spider pig") but this time musing to ourselves whether they send the chickens over to Macs next door to mash into nuggets. the science center has been updated with technology and IT in its exhibits, and they have a new outdoor water park to demonstrate scientific properties of water. however, we were quite annoyed with the little devils cos they were leaping in and out of structures that clearly had a "No entry" sign on them. but generally, it was greatly interesting and educational. let's all go to the Zoo Zoo Zoo next =) retro revival, Check!

// decadent desserts // us with mr. yap from stamford. "heehee" says me to my ex stamford co interns // symposium helpers and organisers // all ex-interns of stamford. 2 renmin uni, 1 PLC, 1 nus, 2 rj, 1 rg //

so, what have i been doing, you ask. well, honestly, nothing much. i have officially been idling my time away since i returned from hk, with no job, income or major purpose. when i hear abt how people feel this great yinyang imbalance within themselves once they have nothing to do, i wonder why i'm not feeling the same urge to do productive things, and a pang of guilt pings in my heart. but... but... i LIKE having a fresh, clean whiteboard to fill up everyday; to have the flexibility to agree to meeting up with friends for a bout of shopping or tea (not in the evenings after a crazy day at work). i mean, sure, income is much welcomed, but i hesitate to call up the numbers in the classified ads that i scan everyday because i want to spend the last few days of break with the friends who are to leave and who have returned. perhaps it's all just a load of crap and the real reason is that i'm a lackadaisical slug; perhaps, but that goes fine by me.

but on the sidelines, i did help out with a china symposium organised by peter from stamford. held in the grand shang on 25th july, i did basic ushering and guest registration. but most of the time, the other 6 interns and i were having a good time chatting and taking photos. i also sat through the symposium and talks, taking down a few notes abt the topic and acquainting myself with legal terms in chinese. buffet lunch in The Line the day before was also magnifique! station after station of various genres of food, and a dessert island that boasted cold stone ice cream, families of cheesecakes, puddings and kuehs. i'd love to return someday to sample the food that i had to pass on, but pragmatically speaking, unless there's a darrrnnn good occasion, the money could be better spent on other things, like clothes! haha. twas a good eye opener, to be in the midst of corporate bigwigs working and hobnobbing.

the farewell dinner/ winston's birthday celebration on friday was a massive event, with us occupying 2 long table at the indon bbq place at riverside. drinks and song at highlander after, but more on that when i upload the photos for my next post. lastly, i got my 1st choice modules for the coming sem; but from 13 aug to 6 sept, it's gonna be 6.30 to 9.30pm nights in school for me everyday. sigh, perhaps i'll meet the fabled spirit of blk B. but on the bright side, i've got no exams to kill myself with except for Evidence, which is a 24 nov paper aka 24 nov starts my holidays! and i do better in assignments than exams, so maybe the grades will make benefit me (or so i hope and pray). here's to sem1, great success...

here's an irrelevant side note: i think that fred looks like the mediacorp actor, adam chen!! well, i don't know who i'm insulting or complimenting, but the general idea is there...=)

the above are photos of us at jerry's 23rd birthday party at his swanky new pad in sentosa cove. such is the lifestyle that some hanker for; privacy from the mundane world with the sea at your doorstep. uninterrupted by civilisation as the main entrance is abt a 10 min drive away from the house. what a perfect excuse to add a machine or two to the fleet! after all, if you can afford to get an address there, a car should be peanuts (the $600k variety, thank you). and unless you're prepared to foam at the mouth and sweat your guts out in your crisp armani suit after an hour long walk out to the mainland, you'd BETTER get a car... we were free to jump into the waters at any time, there being no barriers or fences in the estate, but no thanks, it was dark and the waters were too mysterious. frederick was itching to dunk someone into the sea; but i think birthday parties should stay joyful affairs yeah?

got to go to school to bid for modules in a while. arg i hate the unpredictability and lack of transparency in the bidding system. everything is left to chance and we can't even make informed choices for our own future. it sure doesn't help that the year 4s left us with shitty topics like, what, biotech? emergencies and legal theory?! sigh. i'm stumped at my last choice for the reserves portion... it'll come to me as i key in my info at the comp lab tmr. and the results had better be civil to me!

hallo, i've been orientalised for a week and i'm glad to be home. 3.5 days each in hk and taipei have been refreshing and the shopping yields definitely raised the value of the trip. however, one more day of dad's rotten sense of direction and occasional memory lapses might very well have killed me. he stares at the map all day long, even during meal times, but when the time comes to lead us to a destination, he still makes us walk in the totally opposite direction. arg. the blardy weather was hot, humid and the air was polluted, but mum and i decided to keep the peace and just kept quiet as we backtracked to where we started from. hrrrmmpppph. but still, dad should be commended for his patience as he waited for the womenfolk to shop from 1 end of the street to the other, browsing practically every shop. obviously he had nothing to do but linger outside the shops feeling bored; oh wait, he had his maps for company! =p

taipei the 2nd time around was still rather interesting cos we went to places that i didn't visit the 1st time e.g danshui, hot springs, keelung etc. the people are still vibrant and friendly, and the service is infinitely better than in hk. didn't go shopping much in taipei because i didn't want to bore my parents in ximending, nor did i want to deal with their comments on how weird/ indecently/ eye-catchingly the youngsters dressed there. met up with shi en there too, and he brought me on a tour of shilin. thanks for the mango ice dessert! generally, i enjoyed the taipei leg more. perhaps it's because travel fatigue hadn't set in yet. hong kong often put me in gloomy moods, especially in the evenings when the shops didn't yield good buys, the way back was super long and the humidity made me want to tear off my skin. often, we were disappointed by the restaurants that seemed promising but turned out to produce shitty food served by grouchy, impatient old waiters. ironically, things started looking up from the last night there; kopped 4 tops from Central, and on the morning of departure, i went back to the SAME place that yielded nothing on day 1 but this time made me unwilling to leave because 2 belts and 1 cardi later, i still had so many shops unexplored! the buying didn't stop at the airport: krispy kremes (tasty indeed, but $2 each is quite steep) and a pair of jeans from mango (yes i went all the way to hk to buy sth that could be bought in sg. har har).

anyhu, i'm happy that i'm a local in my own place again. no need to buy those single trip mrt cards, no need to ask people for directions. for all the flak that singapore gets, overall, i think it's one of the best places to live in in asia: the air is clean, the service is improving (GEMS anyone?), the infrastructure is top notch, the cost of living is fair and the girls are pretty hot. haha, national education indoctrination has worked on me =)

*POSTSCRIPT*
greetings from taipei! i'm currently at the "business center" aka computer table in my hotel as i have breakfast. anyway, 3 days worth of taipei has been enough for me; i've probably seen all that is of interest to me, and though the food is damn interesting, i'd die from sugar high or clogged arteries if i eat it for longer. plus, hmmm, travelling with parents just doesn't have the same kick to it. flying off to honkietonk in the afternoon; hopefully the shopping standards increase and for my dad, he hopes the number of conventional chinese restaurants increase.

i've found the link to my photos!
they're Here for part 1
This for part 2 and
That for part 3.

errrm i gather most of the people seeing this have already seen the photos, but, ho hum, just for good measure... k, shall go back to drinking my orange juice. love u all, and take care again.

oldnesssss olddnessss... after 21 years, you're an adult, you're free and hold that special "key". but at the stroke of midnight of july 9 last night, i felt no different; still the same oddball person typing away at her computer at night (albeit with a laptop much reduced in size as compared to her old windows 95 pc years ago). took a photo of myself for good measure and nope, mrt didn't start creating a new train network on my face. still me, still the same, no change in mindset, nor in the way my parents still think that i'm a kid. turning 21 is just a symbolic thing and if i want to, i'll always stay 17. that was my favourite year; but it remains to be seen if the years to come will replace it.

turning 21 could also be an excuse to throw parties and get yourself into a tizzy trying to entertain your 50+ guests all at the same time. i still feel like i've not socialised and mingled enough, although i know i tried my best and was on my feet practically all night, running around meeting new guests and taking photos with the different clusters. crazy state of affairs, but it was lovely to see friends who've been part of your life at different stages all gathered together to wish you well. i'm going to upload the photos soon i assure you, don't rush me =) and thanks so much my dears for the lovely gifts. i felt like a child again yesterday, brimming with excitement as i unwrapped each surprise. thank you most of all, for the friendship and the love throughout my many years, life without friends and loved ones is like a garden without flowers and trees.

on this landmark day of mine, i stood at the alter to pray in the morning; i asked God to help me be a better person. and with my limited vocabulary, i thanked Him, comforted by the knowledge that even though i can't articulate my exact feelings, He knows exactly what i mean to say, and knows what i'll always want to say.

hello friends... i guess i should put u all out of your miseries and attempt to put together a birthday wishlist of sorts. so perhaps... i would like/ wouldn't mind:

1) mango and/or topshop vouchers. shopping is good shopping makes me hairpeeee...
2) mid sized bag (about 30cm long) for normal "going out" purposes. i use my brown esprit one all the time, but it's kinda boring and my mum (and others) cash in on its large storage capacity and make me hold their items for them. hence, i should have a not so big bag (but not tiny and flat cos it'll look ridiculous on me) for a day out in town. preferably leather, with metal detailing, the current fad kinda thing.
3) bodyshop lotus flower fragrance (lotus something; can't quite remember)
4) seed money for my shopping vacation. sponsors needed for 7 days of shopping in HK and taipei! yes, this is the easiest and probably most useful option, just pack me an ang pow; no need to spend time shopping or brainstorming, and i will keep u in my thoughts as i hear the cash box go kachinggg.

if u feel so inclined to humour me by fulfilling one of my wishes (or all), do drop me a note via medium of ur choice! thankie much friends!!

i'm feeling the pull of inertia much more strongly after the day of work, and its stopping me from uploading the photos from friday night at indochine, and my mega birthday dinner celebrations with my family network. must do it soon!

work is tiringggg... i'm currently involved in a case that you can read abt on the 1st or 2nd page of your daily news. i'm doing research, lifting boxes of documents, transporting materials in and out of court, the whole gamut of tasks. when compared to stam****, i daresay i'm working hard!! daryl soh thinks so too, my trusty fellow intern whom we leave to do all the hard core lifting of heavy boxes. one major grouse is that we don't get a lunch hour off to breathe outside air; no sireee, we stay in the office to eat with the lawyers as they discuss the proceedings of the morning's trial and stay on red alert for sudden logistical arrows to fly our way. take a bite of food, receive instruction, scurry off to the photocopier/ retrieve document/ prepare notes etc. but on the bright side, we get food catered for us; lawyers' grub no less, ranging from coffee bean sandwich sets to elaborate bento meals. at first i was annoyed, i was sian-ified, but after a week, i'm easing into the fast paced rhythm and starting to enjoy myself. but maybe it's also because i'm staying in office at my desk more these days, doing research, so i don't have to endure the boring and chilly hours in court. such telling indicators of a life in corporate work next time. aight, i'm off to court now, it's the weekends and we have to lug all the boxes and documents back to office, for fear of ppl sneaking in to steal them. ooooh, that's SO scary.

hello darling friends, this offer sounds rather the enticing... who wants to take it up with me/ cos of me/ for me/ in honour of me. haha damn random. but no, seriously, 12 shooters, so 11 friends and me can go for this and each person pays about $32? 3 bottles and 12 shooters sound like a recipe for fun for 12 people. lemme know if you all want a cheap drinks night.

mambo on wednesday was mucho mal! sucks sucks sucks. 1) post BMT boys prowling the club with their bald heads acting as female sonars. 2) packed to the brim! people were shoving and stomping and being barbaric. nooo way to move, much less dance. respec' to wendy and tris who managed to find their space in phuture. 3) liz, siewmen and i somehow found ourselves in the path of in and outgoing traffic no matter where we ran or how we tried to hide. everywhere we inched, ppl always had to barge their way through via us, so it was *bop around abit- siam to make way- push push stomp- acute pain in the toe region- area becomes more crowded and even bopping around is hard* arggg wtf it was just badddd! so bad that they even played that friggin gatsby ad tune. those idiots on the podium started rubbing their faces in a slow-mo orgasmic fashion. erruggghhhh FARK! since good things always come to an end, conversely, bad things never seem to cease; the music just kept spinning! i kept cringing till finally at 4 plus, the rest decided to make a move. hail blessed bovine! yeap, so that night has kinda turned me off clubbing for a while; 2 bad clubbing nights in a row seem indicative of future prospects. oh but of course, the above event at MOS isn't clubbing; it's merely making use of a good offer. whatever conspires after the drinks will come when they do =)
